Good Reason to Smile: ACAC Dental Day

BURLINGTON, N.C. -- Relief isn’t always the most common feeling during a trip to the dentist, but a few dozen people who visited Fuller Dental Practice on Saturday felt that emotion.

They came from the Allied Churches homeless shelter, and were given cleanings, fillings, and extractions free of charge.

James King, who has been living at the shelter for about a month, was even fitted for dentures. He has been wanting to get some since he lost his teeth about 15 years ago, but could never afford the approximately $3,000 cost. The shelter and dental practice teamed up to cover the costs on his behalf.

"It will probably give me a better self-esteem of myself and it won't give me this homeless look,” said King.

Similarly, Kalicia Mebane, who visited the practice with her partner and three children, said the services were especially needed during this time of instability for her family. They have been staying at the shelter for about two weeks, and Mebane said access to transportation is limited.

"It means a lot because they continue on with the growth of their teeth and healthy teeth and they let me know what to do and next steps. So, it means a lot to us,” said Mebane.
